The Tyne
Road Club is a small and friendly cycling club. Although based in the South
Shields area it has members living across the North East from Morpethto Houghton le Spring and South Shields to Barnard Castle.
The club
organises club runs for members interested in both road and mountain biking as
well as open time trials, club hill climbs, reliability trials and even the
occasional weekend cycling trip.
The Tyne
Road Club was created in October 1938 from a group of like-minded cycle racing
enthusiasts from clubs around the area. These included clubs such as the
South Shields Victoria CC, Hebburn Victoria CC and Newcastle RC. The start
of the war in 1939 temporarily ended the Tyne Road Club when most if not all
of its members were called up to join the Forces. Following the War in
October 1947 several ex-members of the Tyne Road Club namely Fred Cowling,
George Witt and Walter Humphrey, all training partners, reformed the club.
